           Listening Text

“The Children’s Hour” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a nostalgic and affectionate portrayal
of a father’s love for his children. The poem describes a special time of day, referred to as
“The Children’s Hour,” when the speaker’s three daughters, Alice, Allegra, and Edith, come
to spend time with him. The children’s footsteps and laughter fill the house, creating a joyful
atmosphere. The speaker playfully describes his attempts to evade their playful advances,
comparing himself to the formidable Bishop of Bingen in his Mouse-Tower. Ultimately, he
expresses his deep love and desire to keep the children close to his heart forever, even as
time erodes physical structures. The poem celebrates the precious moments shared between
parents and their children, emphasizing the enduring power of love and cherished memories.
