2. 2. A Fable UNIT-1 THEME : FRIENDSHIP
                                                                     A F
                                                                                     able

                        Be Ready!

This delightful poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson humorously reminds us that
friendships can be diverse and unique, just like the characters in the poem—a
mountain and a squirrel. It celebrates the value of understanding and appreciating
each other’s differences, finding harmony in diversity, and recognizing that
everyone has their own special talents and contributions to offer. Friendship is

all about embracing each other for who we are and cherishing the connection
we share. It is a beautiful reminder that true friendship is built on mutual
                respect and acceptance.

            Let’s Recite

            The mountain and the squirrel

            Had a quarrel,

And the former called the latter
            “Little Prig”: Bun replied,

            “You are doubtless very big;
But all sorts of things and weather

            Must be taken in together

            To make up a year

            And a sphere.

And I think it’s no disgrace

            To occupy my place.

If I’m not so large as you,

                                                               17
